Ages: 6 months – Adult

The YMCA offers an extensive learn-to-swim program for all ages. Whether you are a non-swimmer or looking for advanced techniques, the YMCA has a program for you.

Aqua-tots

Ages: 6 months to 3 years old

Goals:

  • Water orientation – being comfortable in the water
  • Breathing- becoming comfortable with mild water submersion
  • Body movement – introduction to water propulation

Misc:

  • Guardian must accompany child in the water.
  • Children must wear a bathing suit AND a swim diaper

Preschool

Ages: 3-5 years old

Goals:

Progression through the 4 levels – Pike Eel, Ray, Starfish

  • Water orientation – being comfortable in the water
  • Breathing- learning water submersion
  • Body movement – learning water population, stroke introduction, gliding
  • Water entry- jumping and beginner diving

Miscellaneous:

  • Guardian NO longer accompanies child in the water
  • Appropriate Swim Attire
  • 1:4 Instructor/Participant Ratio

Youth

Ages: 6-12 years old

Goals:

Progression through the 6 levels – Polliwog, Guppy, Minnow, Fish, Fly-fish and Shark

  • Water safety– introduction to rules
  • Breathing- learning water submersion and rotational breathing
  • Body movement – introduction to each of the 4 major strokes and survival strokes
  • Water entry-race diving techniques with appropriate underwater progression

Miscellaneous:

  • Classes taken in succession are most effective.
  • 1:6 Instructor/Participant Ratio

Adult

Ages: 13 and older

Goals:

  • Through group drills and individual attention, we instruct new and apprehensive swimmers.
  • Breathing- learning water submersion and rotational breathing
  • Body movement – introduction to each of the 4 major strokes and survival strokes
  • Water entry- diving techniques with appropriate under water progression

Miscellaneous:

  • Great class for those who are afraid of the water or never had an opportunity to learn how to swim.
  • Classes taken in succession are most effective.
  • 1:6 Instructor/Participant Ratio

2013 Camp and Summer Guide

The YMCA of Sumter has a long and rich history of youth summer camp programs. We believe that YMCA camping has the capacity to transform young lives in many ways. With campers being surrounded by positive role models, natural environment and our Christian principles, the combination is perfect for enhancing lives and building positive character traits. We look forward to creating life-long memories with your child while they grow in spirit, mind and body.

Fun Factory

Fun Factory is our camp for ages 3-10 held at the YMCA. Each week of camp has a theme with field trips. Other weekly activities include swimming, karate, learning activities, and more.

Camp Mac Boykin

Camp Mac Boykin is an outdoor camp great for your 7 -12 year old. Each day is filled with swimming, hiking, sports, and many other activities centered around the weekly camp theme. Your camper will have a great time getting to know the kids in their age specific groups. All Camp Mac Boykin counselors have been properly trained and can’t wait to meet your camper this summer!

Teen Scene

Do you want your teenager to do more than watch TV and play video games this summer? Teen Scene is a great camp designed for teenagers, ages 11 – 13. Each camper will have an active summer and will have experiences they will cherish for a lifetime. Teen Scene helps teens see the world around them in a new light through field trips, service projects, and so much more.

Cost:

$25 one-time registration fee

Members: $90.00/week

Potential Members: $135/week

C.I.T. Camp

Every kid is different, that’s a fact!  And some need bigger challenges.  If your teen is looking for more than just a fun time this summer, C.I.T. Camp may be just for them.  C.I.T. (Counselors in Training) is designed to give teens 14-16 who are interested in one day becoming a camp counselor or leaders in the community a head start on that experience.  C.I.T.’s get to  work within our camps, assisting in leading activities and learning from counselors.  All the while, we focus on treating these campers as professionals, giving them opportunities to discover their leadership potential and explore their strengths.

Registration:

Location: Fun Factory or Camp Mac Boykin

Cost:
$25 one-time registration fee

Members: $30/session

Potential Members: $45/session

Specialty Camp

Sometimes it takes a little creativity to capture the imagination of a child. The Y is offering 7 sessions of specialty camps throughout the summer for ages 7-12. Themes  include the following:  Multi-Sports, Volleyball, Performance, Basketball and Water.

Registration: Ongoing through August

Season: June –August

Cost:
$25 one-time registration fee

Members: $60/session

Potential Members: $90/session
